Likewise, if you are in denial about symptoms of a mental illness such as anxiety or depression, you might delay seeking help from your doctor or mental health professional. I have even witnessed many alcoholics steadfastly defending their “right” to live as they please, including to drink as they wish. The problem is that no one is trying to take away their right to drink.
Finally, a person moves from denial to accepting their addiction when they recognize the issue and are mobilized to change it. Denial can persist for short or long periods and looks different for everyone. However, as addictive behaviors become more disruptive to a person’s life, it can be harder to deceive oneself and others and ignore what is happening. That is, the future consequences are not weighed in comparison with the present benefits. The benefits of drug use may be clear and immediate, while the costs are typically delayed and uncertain. They tend to prefer drugs because, at the moment of choice, they value drugs more than they value a possible but uncertain future reward (e.g., health, relationships, or opportunities).

Such standardized approaches might be especially useful for identifying high functioning individuals with AUDs whose SES might erroneously imply that they are less likely to have alcohol problems.
